| Aims and Format The objectives of the golf society are very simple; 'to play good golf, good courses and above all have fun!' This motto has been in place ever since day one and has been the foundations of the societies glorious success. Each season the society plays seven courses these vary from eighteen and twenty-seven hole events. In the previous years the society has played championship courses such as The Belfry (Ryder Cup Course) and Royal Liverpool through to supporting local courses. The format of a typical day involves a private coach being provided for transport to the golf course; upon arrival there will be refreshments varying from a cooked breakfast or lunch depending on the arrival time. From this a draw is completed to determine which members will accompany each other in a four-ball format. This draw gives the opportunity at each event to play with different members and generate a universal friendship in the society. The fun commences with watching as the first group tees off at the first which has provided many humorous moments over the previous years as the rest of the members eagerly watch the first group lead off. Once all the members are safely returned a few beverages are sampled then onto a three course meal followed on by the inaugural speeches and prize giving finally returning home by coach. |
History Poynton Golf Society was originally called the Farmers Arms Golf Society and was established in 1985. The society was formed by a group of keen young golfers who wished to unite the enjoyment of playing golf on quality courses with a social aspect. This recipe has proved evidently successful as the society quickly grew in numbers, so popular in fact that it was decided to impose a ceiling of fifty members with honorary members, there has been a waiting list ever since. A significant turning point in the development of the golf society was the advent of the English Golf Union scheme for societies. Poynton Golf Society quickly joined this scheme and has proved ever since to be extremely useful in negotiations with golf clubs for seasonal events as a worldwide recognised golfing organisation. Poynton Golf Society continues to go from strength to strength whilst maintaining a high level of etiquette in the golfing circle, all this coupled with a firm commitment to the English Golf Union puts Poynton Golf Society as one of the leading golf societies in the country. |
